Hi,
I have a laptop and recently it just stopped working. When i turn it on (or
try), the normal thing loads then it says how would you like to start, start
windows normally, safe mode etc. Neither of them work as when you choose one the
xp page starts then it goes black as if there is no power to the screen. This is
immediately followed by a lit screen with the safe mode icons if i tried safe
mode. This is where the problem is. It never gets past this screen. There is the
mouse icon that moves with the mousepad but no matter how long you leave it, it
stays at this stage. This makes it impossible to start the computer to get to
the home page, eliminating any method of solving problems via control panel or
software etc. Please help me, my laptop is essential to my coursework and
without it, i will be stuck.
Please Help and Many Thanks

this does not seem like a problem with the motherboard, or battery, etc.
Do you have the original OC CD or the Manufacturer's CD that came with your laptop?
Are you ok, if you lose all your data on the HDD but can start the machine
If you answer yes to both above Q's :), try these steps:
1. Power the laptop and put in your CD.
2. Restart your laptop and enter the boot menu -- You have to keep pressing the boot key (depends on the laptop, it could be F2/F5/F12 - you will need a little trials here)
3. Once you enter the boot menu, enter the appropriate menu (you will see the directions on-screen..pressing the arrow keys, etc) check the 'boot from CD' option
this will boot your laptop from CD, and the OS will be loaded.
If you do not want to lose data, you can restore/transfer everything on your HDD onto an external disk. Are you in the US? Best Buy does it for a small price if you are,
I am curious, so would be great if you let me know what the problem was and what worked for you.
Good luck.

Mortis has the best answer, but I would do it a little differently...
Boot up with your restore CD. When asked whether you want to Install or Repair, select Install. Setup will inspect your system and find an installation of Windows present and will ask you if you want to Repair it or Install a new installation of Windows, select Repair. It will then copy and replace the system files in your current Windows while leaving the rest of your system intact.
If this doesn't work, it could be due to damaged/corrupt sectors on your hard drive. In this case, boot to the restore CD. When asked if you want to Install or Repair using the console, select Repair. Select the volume to repair. Login if asked. At the prompt, type:
chkdsk /R (the uppercase R is important)
It will then run a disk check, checking for errors and recover data. Let it run for however long it takes to finish. It could take from 1 - 3 hours, but usually less than 1 hour. If you are watching it and it is finding more than a few bad sectors or is taking over an hour to finish, I would take that as a sign that it is deteriorating and get a new hard drive asap as it will only get worse. The disk check should enable you to get your system up and running at least long enough to backup your stuff.
I am a network and PC support technician for a company of about 300 users. The above procedure works about 90% of the time when I am not able to access the PC thru safe mode.

It sounds like your Windows Master Boot Record (MBR) is corrupted, insert your restore CD and reboot your computer, let the computer boot from the CD and when it asks you if you want to repair or install windows select install, select the same hard drive as your current installation and choose a different folder to install windows onto such as C:\WIN. Let your computer finish the installation. When Windows reboots you will see two options for Windows, the top one will be your new install and the bottom one will be for your old install. Try and select the bottom Windows install first and see if you can boot up normally. If not then the top one will work fine and you will still have access to all your files.

Well if you can get into safe mode and the cursor moves, it sounds like it's working. While your in safe mode have a look at My computers properties and in device manager are there any problems showing?
Often it is enough to start in safe mode and then just switch of from the start button to fix this kind of problem.

Try taking the battery out and then replace it after 30 min's I don't know why this works, but it does on our Sony laptop! Only happens once in a while! I got the tip from a computer engineer, he didn't know why it worked either!

When you first turn it on, put in the command (maybe F10) to bring up the BIOS menu. Find the selection for running Windows in normal mode (it may be in a different submenu than other laptops).
