there are actually 3 types of Catergory 5e (Cat 5e) connectors in the market. they are Straight Through, Crossover, and Rollover.

Straight, is mainly used for connecting a PC-Router, Router-Modem, etc. a general observation would be those units with different functionality that you want to connect together would use straight.

Cross, is mainly used for connecting two units of the same functionality together, such as PC-PC, Router-Router, Switch-Switch. they use cross cables.

Rollover, is used for configuring a router. this is what you don't need to know lest you confuse yourself.

note: this section is how you determine whether the cable is a cross cable or a straight cable.

look at the cable connectors with the retainer clip facing away from you. look inside and note the colours. then pair the other cable connector side by side in such a way that all the retainer clips are facing down and all the connectors are facing the same direction. see if the other connector has the same sequence of color coding. if it is the same, it is a straight cable. if it is different by a few wires, then it is a cross. now, if the whole cable color is reversed entirely, meaning blue, orange and green is shown at the other end as green, orange and blue, take the cable back, strangle the shopkeeper with the cable and ask politely for a cross cable, not a rollover cable.

Straight is used when you are gonna connect to the network using hub or switch.
Crossed is used when you're trying to connect to PCs directly 1 on 1.

Basically, you need to cross in order to connect the right points on the socket. The hub/switch is crossing the connection for you.

straight cable all the wires are in order from one to eight, in cross over, wires one & three and two & six are crossed. straight through would be used for a computer to router/switch connection and crossover would be used to connect two of the same type of systems (router to router, switch to switch, or computer to computer)
