Hello Captain Caveman,

The DVD+R and DVD-R are competing formats much like the old VHS and Beta formats in video tapes. Today most drives are Hybrid and handle both formats. They are usually labeled DVD+/-R

The market for recordable DVD technology will never stabilize in favor of either the plus or dash formats, which is mostly the result of the increasing numbers of dual-format devices that can record to both formats; it has become very difficult to find new devices that can only record to one of the formats. However, because the DVD-R format has been in use since 1997, it has had a five-year lead on DVD+R. As such, older or cheaper DVD players (up to 2004 vintage) are more likely to favor the DVD-R standard exclusively, and when creating DVD’s for distribution (where the playing unit is unknown or older) the DVD-R format would normally be preferable.

Now we are starting the new high definition with the same situation. There will be a shake out between Blu Ray and HD-DVD. My personal solution in that war is to wait before I buy. LG and others already are coming out with a player that will play both formats.

For all practical purposes, if your drive can write both kinds of discs, there is not much difference. However, when played back, +R discs are generally more compatible with stand-alone DVD Players.

The primary difference between them lies in the way data is written to the disc. See: http://www.dvd-supply.com/whisdvdvdvan.html

(The first answer to this question has some incorrect information. Both +R and -R discs are available in single- and double-layer formats, although -R DL discs are hard to find.)

Basically, it only makes a difference VERY infrequently to the occassional DVD burner like you or me. DVD+ allows a second layer to be burned, whereas DVD- allows one layer.

The main difference is that DVD-R is used more for video and DVD+R for data. More appliances usually use -R

The + and - point out the direction of spin, one spins clockwise and the different counterclockwise. It has no result on their archives skill, yet you should compare the disc on your burner for it to paintings right.

READ differently not CAPATIBLE each other.
MUST have DVD-RECORDER be able to read both.
IF DVD RECORDER RECORDS 1 type, 1 DVD-R, it can PLAY that DISC, but not DVD+R

BEST to have 1 that RECORDS/PLAYS BOTH DVD+R/DVD-R, not just 1 type.
