EMOtional
Emo is a type of music, which is derived from early 80's hardcore. I don t know the whole story, but emo combines hardcore with more melodic and experimental music.
Emo kids are considered wimps by most "tough guys". This may or may not be true. Classic "emo stories" are of kids crying at shows. (something I recently witnessed at a show...)
I guess this public show of emotion is seen as weakness by most in the HC community. Whereas Emo music tends to wrestle the inner demons of personal defeat, love loss, heartache etc.

Emotive Hardcore which was a music genre which originated in the 80's & died out in the early 90's. Now you'll gonna come across alot of people who say that 'emo' means emotional or emotionally unstable but let me tell you that they are wrong. They don't know jackshit & are just making assumptions. Obviously they haven't done their research. You're gonna come across alot of people who think that alternative bands such as Panic! at the Disco,Fallout Boy,AFI or MCR are 'emo' but again they are just assuming that because these guys wear eyeliner, black or are fascinated with the idea of death. 'Emo' isn't about what you're appearance is or what fashion style you love or about hating life & yourself, its about a music genre which you love & support. Bands such as Rites of Spring,Jimmy Eat World(before the middle came out),Weezer(the old 90's songs),Dashboard Confessional or Hawthorne Heights. Theres aot of ignorant people out there who don't understand these subcultures & just assume the worst in them. They're scared of people being different. As long as you yourself know that 'emo, 'punk' or 'goth' came from subcultures which formed in the 70's-80's & that they are all music genres & nothing more. As long as you understand that that the fashion doesn't make you part of these subcultures. As long as you understand that you're only part of these subcultures if you live & breathe for their music & support them then you're fine.

Emo stands for emotional and a music genre is all it is...its just another word for hardcore lyrical punk. But people have turned it into a stereotype but logically people cannot be emo...hopefully this trend will fade.
