I have a linksys wireless-N router, and a linksys wireless N external receiver. The internet is extremely slow, despite my computer saying I'm connected at 270 mbps. When I plug in with an ethernet cable everything works great.

The router is set up with all default settings. I've tried resetting it. My external wireless N receiver worked fine with my old router... a wireless B router. What could I do to fix this problem? Could the router perhaps be defective? Thanks for your help.

Do you have a second router that's 802.11a/b/g? Does your neighbor? Are the two 802.11n of the same brand and same "n" pre-release draft technology? Remember that for compatibility issues it will downgrade its speed to transfer at the same speed of older technology. You need to run it in the right mode, between Legacy mode, Mixed mode, or another mode sometimes called greenfield mode in which is not going to try to talk to any other 802.11a/b/g but only 802.11n.

Something to remember is that the highest speed is the speed of your internet provider, the speed of the router is just the speed the router talks to the receiver card, but if you had a good speed before and was expecting higher transfer with the faster router I'd say is a compatibility issue with another 802.11a/b/g router outthere. Interference from a source, or incompatibility between the two pre-release 802.11n technologies.

Turn off all security for the wireless network and test the speed, if the speed increases then the problem is in the encryption type used or in the key itself, adjust some of the encryption settings and try again. You should also scan the area for EM and RF interference.
