This can be a sign generally of two things. One, if you have downloaded a lot of programs and have a lot of start up processes running you may need a RAM Memory Upgrade. This would generally apply only if you have installed a lot of softwares. The standard upgrade has been in the Windows XP years sometimes called the 512M RAM Upgrade. This means your RAM installed from the factory was probably at 256M of processor Random Access Memory. This is kind of a cache of memory that start up programs are in to make things faster - like antivirus, antispyware, firewall, other programs installed like media and other applications that start up and run when you start your computer. This is farily simple, and can be done at home by ordering the correct upgrade little electronic stick that snaps into the computer inside. To do it takes looking up your exact Model and what the limit is for the upgrade. The standard has been most PCs were released with 256m RAM and the maximum size is 512M RAM. So the upgrade would be ab additional 256M RAM memory stick. You can buy lower like a 128M RAM to add that would make your mazximum then 384M RAM. You would want to have the maximum size of RAM possible for fastest and safest operation, (Safe so that running software does not fail). Note that the new PCs with Vista are like a whopping 1G (gigiabits) of RAM. This is best if you run broadband and download a lot of media and audio files - and the more RAM Memory you have installed generally allows the most multi-tasking.

The other problem may be thaqt your PC is infested with adware and spyware. This will slow everything down to a crawl with multiple or severe infections. Just like viruses and worms, there are spyware installations combined with trojans that have their own SMTP mailer installed (outgoing) that continually transmits your personal information in files in your pc back to the cyber criminals on the other end. You should have the standard security in place to prevent all this - Antivirus, Firewall, and Antispyware. Without these you and your PC are a total risk to security and safety of the actual machine. If you go to this link, you will see a list of free scans for infections. They are on the right side of the page:

If you still see the dreaded "Your system is low on virtual memory" message then the first thing to do is make sure your computer is configured to allow Windows to automatically manage the virtual memory. In Windows XP, follow these steps:

Click Start, then open the Control Panel.

Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

Click the Advanced tab.

Under Performance, click Settings.

Click the Advanced tab.

Under Virtual memory, click Change.

Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.

Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.

Click OK three times and restart your computer.

When you allow Windows to manage your virtual memory, it should make the optimum amount of virtual memory available, by automatically shrinking or enlarging the paging file as needed. If that doesn't solve the low virtual memory problem, there are a few more things you can try.

There are lots of possibilities...the most common is that you downloaded something that is slowing down your computer. Run an antiVirus program to see if you picked up some adWare or virus.

Try defragging your system. If that doesn't help try running the program that deletes unused and excess files. That should help.
