when he shuts down the computer and restarts, he gets a black screen which states that he's booting from a different drive...I don't remember the exact message, but it prompts him to hit F1 for setup (which takes him to the BIOS) or F2 to continue. The computer runs fine after all the recovery disks and back ups were installed.

no problems were encountered when we replaced the hard drive. everything was connected properly.

The person who installed his hard drive should have checked his BIOS (F1) to make sure that the hard drive was configured correctly.

Pop into your local computer repair shop and ask them for advice on how to use the BIOS to change the Boot Disk. It sounds to me like your BIOS is detecting that something has changed and it's really asking you to change it permanently, which you want to. The computer is probably set to boot off the old drive, which you don't want anymore, so you need to go into the BIOS and change the setting so that it wants to boot off the new drive. It's actually only superficial and if you're fine pressing F2, you're doing no harm by doing that everytime.

Hope that helps,

In bios first try to detect the hard disk properly. It is what kind of hard disk IDE or SATA. Now a days some bios have more options for harddisk. gothrough bios and try again.

That's usually what happens when you install Windows to any other partition, besides the C:\ partition. If it bothers you/him, Windows will need to be reinstalled to the C:\ partition, along with doing a Windows Deltree on the D:\ or E:\ partition.
