I am a graphic designer in South Africa, and my entrance exam was literally your portfolio and maybe a drawing test. Just to see your skill level. Its basic, but I would recommend you spend as much time as you can just drawing and praticising your skills.

Also spend some time cutting out logos from magazines as well as advert layouts to keep. This will help when you need some inspiration and will also help you with setting your own style. Good luck graphic design is both exciting and stressful

One way to aim for your goal is to begin with your own communications. Graphic design focuses upon problem solving and information clarity. Your informal writing style is fine for chatting with friends but it is not really appropriate for professional communications--and your question is a professional question.

To find some information about graphic design and design education, go to www.aiga.org and click on the menu for "careers" at the top of the page. Frankly it is a poorly organized website, but there is good information there.

Can you talk to some professional designers and ask them for advice? They will probably have certain schools that they recommend and other suggestions to help you focus and prepare. Most designers are willing to help out students who are excited about design. In USA, sometimes a high school student can "shadow" a designer by spending a day or two in the office just seeing what happens. That is a good way to gain understanding about how the profession really works.

I am sorry I can't give any advice about preparing for entrance exams. Good luck to you! Graphic Design is challenging and competitive but it is a very satisfying career.
