Several times when I'm viewing a page on the internet, a pop-up will appear like the ones that come up sometimes, only this one says something like, "protect your computer from hacking and viruses, get virus doctor," or something along those lines. A new window pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen, and even if you click the x on the pop-up add, it closes whatever page you were viewing before and expands the little window, showing a webpage to get the "virus doctor" thing. This has happened three times now, all while viewing completely different webpages, and all three times I have lost my work on the page I was viewing before. I've been too frustrated to write down what it says, but has this happened to anyone else? Is it a virus attack, or am I being hacked or something? What can I do to fix it?

I downloaded Ad-Aware and Avast a couple days ago. The first scan I ran with Ad-Aware showed over 100 infected files, although Avast has yet to show any. Since downloading it, I run at least five or six scans per day with Ad-Aware, nearly always coming up with new infected files. I also tried downloading Xoftspy, which ran a scan and showed me 250 infected areas before it asked me to pay $40 to register. It did run very quick, and if I was capable of shelling out the cash I most certainly would, but I just renewed my subscription to Norton Antivirus last month, costing around $60 for the 2007 edition (which, incidentally, shows me no infected folders when I run scans). Free programs would be much better, and I am in the process of searching for one that can identify as many as Xoftspy did. Any clues?

Download Adaware 6.0 SE Personal. Scan your computer.. This will remove the virus doctor adware from your system, and possibly, more than you know you have. The scan doesn't take long, so don't worry.

Also, try using a more secure browser, like Firefox.

Great news. You are not being hacked. Just bothered by worthless advertisements. The solution to your problem is very simple. Take a look to the right at the bottom of your internet explorer page and, you will see 3 to 5 boxes. Ususally the second box has pop up and anti pop up options :-). If that's the box good and if not left click each of them till you find it. When you do you will see it say turn on pop up blocker or turn off pop up blocker. Place your cursor over turn on pop up blocker: your pop up problem is gone. Also where you see the pop blocker tab you will see another tab under it that will allow you the options to show an information bar at the top of the page and play a sound when a pop up is blocked. You can check or uncheck either or both of them at your option.

This is spyware. It is a trick to make people think they need to get the advertised product. Get 2 free softwares and run them one after the other: Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. Google the downloads.
