is the webcam turned on?
does the messenger (example, yahoo messenger) recognize that you have a webcam?

Nothing wrong with that. If both of you like it that way, you are doing nothing wrong.
Or maybe, they can see you but don't wanna tell you that. Could be some web cam role play.
Next time you tell them that you don't see them.

not enough info to answer. give us more detail.
check if your cam's focus is OK.
be sure that you are not using a special cam program designed for msn ( like split cam)
