My partner and I are having a beautiful baby! But he wants the last name to be Herscell, (his last name), but I want mine and his, (Gahan-Herschell), but only on the birth certificate.
He dosn't know why I am doing this. But it is just for future prefrences, in case we have arguments and so on so forth.
Oh, in everyday use (schooling ect.) I will use his last name, I just want mine and his hyphenated on the birthcertificate?

What are my rights if I do this and am I making the right choice?
Thankyou in advance.

I think both would be nice. I tried to talk to my daughter when she was pregnant with her son, to put her surname down, 2 years later she left him as he was on drugs and stealing and is having all kinds of problems now with his name.

That depends on where you live and what kind of relationship you are in. In Florida, for instance, if parents are fighting over a name, the baby is given both names in alphabetical order by the courts. In other states, there are different rights given to parents. However, in Florida that naming right only goes to heterosexual couples. Couples who are homosexual are not covered in the same manner. Some states allow homosexual adoptions, others don't.

And that is only for the US.

If you are already fighting over what to name the baby and you are fighting for a hyphenated name "future prefrences, in case [you] have arguments and so on so forth," it makes me a bit nervous about the plans to have a baby right now. If you are not pregnant yet or have not made adoption arrangements, take some time and talk things through a bit more. Try couples counselling to see if you can work this and other issues out.

Either way, I wish you a healthy and happy baby, so matter what her/his name is!

If you are in a Western country, you have the right to name your baby pretty much anything you want---Princess Barbie Sugar Pops would be legal.
You can legally put whatever name you want on the birth certificate---the bigger issue seems to be between you and your partner.

I see your point , you can use both names if desired on the birth certificate.
For the baby's sake though, and to avoid problems later, you should give him a legitimate one...
