Why have sony put a different hardware chip in the uk version of the PS3 .?

Now we won't be able to play most of PS1/PS2 games on the system.They have changed the hardware .

European PS3s will still be able to play PS2 and PS1 games. But they will do it through software emulation, like the Xbox 360. That means it won't be able to play every game made for those systems, but according to Sony the vast majority should work. Sony dropped the necessary hardware because it was an added expense on top of an already pricey system. This change is likely to spread to all territories where the system is sold, including North America.

Call me and old cynic, however, i believe this to have been driven by Gordon Browns little organisation called the treasury.

Think about it. you've bought a new PS3 and you want to play games on it. The new games probably cost around £40 each. If you could play your old games on it you would probably make do with those until you can afford a new PS3 game (bear in mind you've already forked out around £400 for the console).

If that was the case Gordy would be missing out on the lovely tax to be made for him on the purchase of a new game, the revenue on one game costing £40 would be £7.

Therefore, if 1,000,000 bought the console and bought an average of 10 games the treasury would have made a whopping £140,000,000 in tax from the sale of both the console and games!!! Not bad eh? Between this and the taxation of motorists the war in Iraq and Afghanistan becomes that bit cheaper for the treasury. You never know, there might even be some for health and/or education, then again Gordy would probably save it for the next "Liberation" of a country.

Usually that because or TVs run on a PAL format and their one run on NTSL format. You change these hardware chips if you know someone who chips up PS2s who does this so the PS2 can play pirate copies of PS2 games. These people are usually the ones who does these things to a PS3.
