I'd say Basement Bob pretty much covered most of the best and worst areas. There are a handful of others I'd like to add to the list:
Central:
Comely Bank
North:
Barnton, Ravelston, Blackhall
East:
Willowbrae
South:
The Grange, Bruntsfield
West:
Juniper Green
Avoid:
Craigmillar, Granton, Pilton, Burdiehouse. And although Bob has it down as a desirable place to live and it does seem to be popular, I would say Leith is on the cusp of an avoidable area also.
To me personally, the nicest areas of Edinburgh are around Barnton and Colinton. You'd better have deep pockets though if you intend to live there!
Jim told you to look at the ESPC, which stands for the Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre and is a very good place to look for houses. Here is a link to their site:

I live in Marchmont which is in the Southside of Edinburgh - Marchmont, Newington, Morningside and Bruntsfield (all in Southside) all have good amenities, have easy access to the city centre, but are a bit quieter. Marchmont and Newington both have large student populations, but I find them quite good areas to live in as there is a bit more going on than further out (ie shops, bars and restaurants).
Also, Leith is an up and coming area - some parts are best avoided, but there has been a lot of development there, so it might be worth a look.
Dont go for New Town (North of city centre) or Old Town (round about the Royal Mile) as these will be more expensive.

Try just outside Edinburgh, house prices here have gone thought the roof recently,The ESPC is a good guide to look at for buying or renting, and will give you an idea whats on offer price wise, amenities, schools etc.Try places like Musselburgh,Port Seton,Dunbar, all on the east side of Edinburgh, all fairly quiet with good public transport links.

You might want to try places like Morningside or Marchmont which are quiet and safe and not too far from the city centry. It all depends on your budget because Edinburgh can be quite expensive.
Try contacting the Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre (ESPC) for an idea of what's on the market and the prices you can expect to pay.

Broomhouse and Wester Hailes are cheap areas to stay and have nice bits to live. Avoid Craigmiller, Millerhill and Edinburgh Zoo as there full of animals!

As a frequent English visitor to Scotland I would advise to try Glasgow instead, much nicer city and people. Edinburgh has one or two sites you can easily do in a day but the traffic is terrible and the streets seem full of drunks or drug addicts.
