I called the doc Friday and explained my son has had a runny nose for 10 days (12 days now). He had a fever the first day and that was it. Doc said to use Benadryl to slow it down and if it doesn't stop by Monday, to bring him in. I WILL be taking him in. My other 3 kids have never had this so I'm a little worried. My question is has anyone had this happen? What was it? Thanks!

Doc says sinus infection.
Thanks all who answered. I had never had a sinus infection and none of my other three kids has had one either. So I was a little worried.

clear runny nose, no high temperature = allergy or seasonal change.

yellow or green runny nose, with temperature= infection

clumpy globby snot= bacterial infection requiring antibiotics.

runny/ smooth snot= viral, let it run its course, no antibiotics, plenty of water to drink (until wee is clear then you know they have had enough to drink), some eucalyptus under the pillow to keep sinuses clear and lots of cuddles..it will go in time.

I'm no doctor, but I do have a degree in MH, Motherhood of 5 children.
Sounds like allergies, it's that time of year where pollen is blowing, flowers and trees are blooming and grass is growing. Do you live in an area were the level of mold is high? Also, is there a lot of dust in the air? So many factors when it's allergies. He can also be allergic to your pets, cats are the worse. Is he cutting teeth? Sometimes a child will react like this prior cutting a tooth. Then don't leave out food. Have you started him on any new foods?

I personally would talk to my family doctor and have him refer you to a good ENT. Mainly, because if his nose is running it's affecting his ears. The ENT specialist can keep a check on him and test your child when he's older for allergies. One of my children went through this and after we found out what she was allergic to the doctor then was able to prescribe the proper medication. Don't be giving your child medication without knowing why, all you're doing is masking the illness, not curing the illness.

Do hope he starts feeling better.

My son is in his second week with a runny nose (21 months)...if there has been no fever recently it is probably viral. Im not sure where you live but around here (Illinois) the weather has been making alot of people sick, 80 degrees one day and 50 the next. Good luck!

If his mucus is still green after 12 days of a runny nose, he probably has a sinus infection.

It could be just allergies, but usually you'll get clear mucus with that.

Have your child seen by the pediatrician and he/she will give you an accurate diagnoses.

Since it has been going on for more then 10 days then yes you should go to the doctor. Most over the counter meds are not very effective at this age. Most people do not know that studies on most otc meds do not show any really help against cold symptoms. The only really helpful otc meds are tylenol and motrin with should only be used for fever. So please take her to her pediatrician.

Probably the season change. My 11 month old just got sick about 2 days ago. Our Pedi always says to bring them in after 10 days though.

I'm no Dr., but it's prolly due to the season change. I don't know what part of the country you live in, but we live in the "Ohio Valley"..basically a valley of crap floating in the air...horrible place to live in if you have allergies.
I'd bet it's just allergies on the little one.
Just make sure to let the Dr. diagnose that.

Good Luck!
