why do we still have black bars on the upper and lower part of our screens

Wide screen dvds are basically a shrunken 16:9 aspect ratio image (fit to width) super imposed on a black square that has a 4:3 aspect ratio. If you watch this on a wide screen tv that stretches 4:3 to 16:9, the movie image will still be stretched horizontally and leave you with those annoying black bars.

To fix this, most wide screen tvs provide a format or aspect ratio button that usually has several presets. One of these will cause the 4:3 aspect ratio to be fit to the width of the tv. Since the 16:9 ratio is fatter, this results in the tv cropping the top and bottom of the image. In most cases, this is bad for tv:you lose captions, lagos, 800 numbers, etc. However, this is good for wide screen movies because the cropped image is the black bars.

Consult your tv's owner's manual for more information.

because it was designed for "wide screen" playing... and even though you got your tv to be wides creen the dvd people anticipated everyoen else having a squiar... so they fixed it that way... is it streatching it out to much? or is it a full black box around it... widescreen dvd's have the black bar as you know... bu tyou still having it for wide screen tv.. hum... I dont think they make them like that yet... also depends if you are using normal dvd's, blue ray, or anything else that's special.. =)
