I must be really lucky. I never had a problem with the Dells I've owned/worked on. I've replaced/added CPU's, motherboards, memory, harddrives, optical drives, floppy drives, video cards, etc., and I didn't get anything directly from Dell.
Oh, the reason I've had occasion to work with all these parts is because I did full rebuilds on 2 Dells - 1 smoke damaged, 1 being built with parts off eBay (case, MBoard and COA's. The rest from Fry's or NewEgg, or wherever I could get a deal) Mostly, I added Ram, extra drives, wireless cards, modems, IDE controllers.
The Dell website lets me find and download drivers specific to the motherboard, chipset, etc., utilities and programs are also made available.
There were times I despised Dell, but that had to do with a dispute with customer service, not tech support.
As far as returning defective parts, I don't think you'd have to send back the whole unit, just the defective unit. (unless it's the case, motherboard or directed to by Support) If you can help them figure out the faulty unit, they will send you another one. If it's out of warrantee, you can replace most anything yourself.

Some part are proprietary like if the motherboard or the power supply goes then you will have shell out some big bucks unless it is still covered under the warranty . DELL switched the power leads on the power supply and motherboards so you can not get those replaced just anywhere . also (mostly with ECC EDO ram) you may have some problems accepting generic brands of memory ( if you buy cheap ram you may have to try a few sticks before you will ones that the computer will see and accept.so the cheapest way is to get all the extended warranty you can afford and hope for the best. hope this helps you and good luck ! ! !
THIS IS FROM EXPERIENCES WITH DELL
have a nice day

dell computer are the worst computer 4 me.But u heard wrong. They can be repaired but they make it sooo complicated probably so u cant fix it yourself. I work as a tech and I hear people saying e-machines are sooo bad but honestly as a tech they are much better than dell and much more cheaper too. get a emachines or maybe even a compaq may be a little more expensive.

i AM NOT just looking for 2 points here when im saying that i agree that dells dont need to be upgraded through dell only, they are just as capeable as most pc's
but the point to this post, is to your first response
dont you dare invest in an E-Machine, they are cheap, indeed, but you get what you pay for, you pay nickels and dimes for it, and you get nickels and dimes that were melted and formed into a computer somehow, all jokes aside, they are very unreliable and not worth it, dells good, or HP
