They're a lot alike. Rugby players don't use any type of padding like American football players do. American football is based on Rugby, with just some different rules and things added in but all of the basics are the same. Some people say Rugby is the tougher sport because of the no padding thing.

The ball, the rules of play, etc. And American football is 10x more violent than rugby. That's why we like it so much! lol

rugby is a free flowing game where as american football stops and starts and stops and starts, and goes for a week.
