Since time immemorial, divorce is illegal in the Philippines. Under our Family Code, only annulment restores a married couple to single status, allowing each to re-marry. Easier said than done.
The Catholic Church has a very strong influence in the Philippines, inspite of the separation of church and state. There are pending resolutions to legalize divorce in the country - but some government analysts are of the opinion that it will never pass. This debate has been going on for years and years.

There is no divorce in the Philippines. But couples can file for a legal separation or annulment of marriage.

based on my understanding, you can only file a legal separation but it does'nt give you the right to marry again for you remain binded by the marriage vows. tsk tsk tsk
