Well, in terms of a romantic anime that had a sad ending
I'd say the most sadest in terms of a romantic anime that I've seen would be Ayashi no Ceres.
I mean, one by one her family and friends are murdered and she falls in love with a guy who protected her but works for the company that is doing the horrible stuff to her.
By the end of the series, she basically has to kill her brother due to the reincarnations that they are Aya is rencarnation of a celestial being and her brother Aki was reincarnation of Ceres's husband whom went insane and still is.
Not to mention, Aki under possesion of the past spirit basically kills Aya out of jealousy and Tooya gives up his mana to save Aya, then they are able to kill Aki to give him peace.
But at the end Aya and Tooya have a baby, but because Tooya gave up his mana to keep Aya alive he says he only has maybe a year left and then he's going to die.
That's pretty sad.

Kimba the White Lion has a pretty sad ending.The last episode(episode number 52) in the original series,but I have seen only 3 minutes of it.Many characters die,but not sure about it.Or see Jungle Emporer Leo.Sad ending,but I am not sure about romance...

How approximately Bokura ga Ita? My pal suggested its sturdy and rather unhappy (I had no longer watch it theory, so i don't be attentive to if it genuine) or in keeping with risk Love Hina (yet their in college so as that a no-no) So i think of "Kare Kano" is great its humorous, has a splash of drama and romance, the girl till now each and every thing hates the guy yet later likes him

Eureka Seven, the whole series has a lot of romance, plus action, its 50 rpisodes.

well.....i heard Air was a good/romantic anime and has a sad ending. There is also fruits basket, the last episodes are really sad. i love fruits basket ^.^

Rurouni Kenshin but you probably won't see it on tv anymore but u can always buy the series hope i was some help even though i probably wasn't.

ayashi no ceres. when aya want to got her life back she must lose very many thing in her life.
