Well government and religion are two different things, so government was who allowed it not the church because it is still against same sex marriages.
Now the question would be why the Mexican government legalized same sex marriages? I just can say that I really don't know...

SALTILLO, Mexico –
Legislators in the dusty northern border state of Coahuila have stunned Mexico by giving same-sex couples property and inheritance rights long reserved for married heterosexuals.
It is a first for this predominantly Roman Catholic country, a measure so swift and so bold that it surprised even the gay community. All of a sudden, gay rights are on the national agenda.
Since Coahuila's Legislature voted 20-13 to pass the law in January, Julieta López, the congresswoman who introduced the legislation, has received calls from her counterparts in states stretching from Chihuahua to Chiapas.

similar sex marriage is authorized and known in the states of CT, DC, IA, MA, MD, ME, NH, enormous apple, VT, WA. yet isn't known with assistance from america as a united states because of DOMA signed with assistance from bill Clinton. He defined his reasoning later putting forward it replaced into the great element to do on the time. So, a international couple won't be able to social gathering in the USA of a because the Feds gained't enable a fiancee to come back to the U. S. below those situations. proper right here international locations in the international do comprehend similar sex marriage, and let fiancees to enter the country regardless of what sex they are. I heard that it was in like one city, I'm not sure though and I highly doubt it is the whole country....Maybe you are getting confused...It is allowed for same sexes to live together but I don't really know about marrying each other. I'll get back to you on that one.....
and we're not really homophobic XD
(It's against my religion and I don't agree with it but I still respect everybody as a person...I can't say that about all Mexicans though)
P.S. Good Question

It isn't the whole country. But don't upset yrself. Do yrself a favour and don't go to Mexico. It will only make you angry.
Maybe they feel that homosexuals all pay the same taxes as straights and so deserve the same rights.
Or maybe Dorothy Gail blew out of Kansas again!

And when will the US do the same? In some areas the US is very open and in some areas (such as sex or homosexuality) they are still in the dark ages.

Several countries have now given equal marriage rights to same sex couples. The US is way too dominated by the backward religious zealots. We allow them to dictate to our politicians. Most of these other countries maintain a true separation of church and state.

Just as Spain allowed same sex marriages, being just as Conservative Catholic as Mexico.
Good for them!!
At least they don't have their collective heads permanently affixed to the backside of their shorts.
