good question...I don't know if i have ever actually died in a dream. I've had stuff happen where I could just "feel" that I was going to die. I think if you where to be completely dead you might have a glimpse of what happens when you die. I usually wake up or move on before it gets to that point.

If I am able to breathe under water in a dream, does this mean I can do this in real life? Is this a prophetic sign that I'll be able to breathe under water in the near future? No, of course not--it's just a dream.

you yourself are telling that it is a "DREAM" naturally whatever happens in a dream is just a mind-play.
our unconscious -mind or the "sleeping mind" is also working during the day like the RAM in ur PC. nothing is recorded in that but everything is experienced.
i am very sure that in some part of your life, someone must have scared you about "death" or maybe you fear dying. this experience is what must have "crept" into your unconscious mind at that time and it is just a reproduction of this which you must have experienced recently.

That is a good question, I have died in my dreams and woke up
alive, but could my heart have stopped for a moment and started
back up? I don't know, but the opposite has happened to, I
suffered from sleep apnea and my heart stopped, thus starting
the dying process yet I was alive in my dream and couldn't understand why I began to float uncontrolably until I was brought back. so it is a mystery yet to me.

I have never died in my dreams but I have been mortally wounded. I think it's a protecting mechanism; just like we can't hold our breath 'til we die. Our bodies knock us out and take over. It would be interesting if anyone here can answer this question.

I die all the time in my dreams. For instance, there was one dream where I was shot in the face. Don't ask me about that one though...
