I've been living in Chicago for a few years and am ready to leave. The neighborhoods here are too segregated and I'm tired of the yuppies taking over with their condos. I like a smaller big city (like 500,000) without all the urban sprawl. Something cheaper, both in housing costs and general income... I prefer to be around working class people, not the suburbanites. Also looking for a good mix of races; no more than 65% white. I'm not into 'nightlife' but enjoy a decent music scene. My boyfriend and I both are looking to start careers in the arts (gallery/museum and art education) so it has to have some sort of art culture going on besides landscape paintings. I'm originally a country girl so it's very important to me that the wilderness not be too far of a drive; however I'm not a hiking/skiing/live outdoors type. We hate hot weather, too. Some cities we've come up with are: Portland, Memphis, Cleveland, etc. Any suggestions?

Portland is yuppier than Chicago. Memphis is hotter than you could believe in the summer. Anything from Ohio needs to be nuked from Orbit. San Fransisco might be nice, Albany too. Chicago's a LOT better than other places, boy did I learn that one first hand. Austin is good for art, but very white and segregated. You might like Phili, but keep in mind the further south you go the > the segregation, and the further west you go the higher the fonies and yuppies.

We seem to have a lot in common! I am originally a country girl too, and I really love Nashville. The people here are really nice yet still interesting. The music scene is great (definitely not just country!). The cost of living is pretty low compared to the rest of the country. Plus, you said you like the wilderness to be not too far away. There is some beautiful scenery around Nashville. It's located on the Cumberland Plateau and close to a gorgeous area called Natchez Trace. I can't offer too much advice about the art scene, besides that I have been to some really cool art shows here. =] The weather is nice, especially this time of year.

Some advice about Memphis: I definitely would not recommend living there. It's a cool place to visit occasionally, and there are some great music/art places. But it's a very dangerous place. I was mugged there once, and crime is pretty out of control there.

Hope this helps a little!

Portland, Oregon.

Definitely.

Portland is way laid back. There are a lot of stinking Californians polluting our city, but I think you'll be happy here.
