The Marconi wireless telegraph was the main source of communication between ships in the early 1900s. However, not all ships had telegraphs on board, so rocket flares, Morse lamps, and flags were other ways of communicating. Actually, the year Titanic sailed was the same year the SOS distress call was created, replacing the original CQD distress code ("Come Quickly, Distress"). Titanic was the first ship to call SOS.

"Originally, radio was called 'wireless telegraphy', which was shortened to 'wireless'. "

Information was sent by generating powerful spark pulses in Morse Code.
