it depends on how it was done. my first boy (now 7) was circumcized with the gauze and i had to clean it every time he was changed (about every hour). my nephew had the plastic cap on after his circumcision and my sister didn't have to clean it at all. she just waited for it to fall off and it was fine. my 3 month old son also had the gauze but it was a different kind. the gauze fell off after a couple weeks and everything is fine now. i just push back the skin and clean with every diaper change and there's no problem.
what did the dr say to do? you should ask the dr to make sure you are doing it correctly so that it doesn't grow back over. that happened to my first son. the skin grew back over a little bit and then it had to be ripped back. it was horrible.
good luck and congrats.

My son is 2 mo old, I'm new at having a boy I have 2 girls, but he is circumsized. The gauze fell off after a couple of diaper changes and I just cleaned him when I changed him. The doctor said as long as there wasn't excessive bleeding it would be fine. No baths for a few days, only showers so as not to soak the area. It was tender for about a week, but now he's great.

If your son has just been circumcised, you need only monitor it to see that it is protected with vaseline (this keeps it from sticking to his diaper and keeps urine and feces from getting at his 'wound'.)
When he is healed, cleaning is 'automatic'. You just wash his penis like you wash the rest of his groin. The whole purpose and advantage of circumcision is to make cleanliness so much easier.
Hope this helps

if they took off all extra skin, then i'd guess rarely, that's the point of circumcising isn't it?
if still skin left, then whenever bathing, would still need to clean under remaining skin
