Could they be sustitute 'Easterns', with the guys getting blown away really representing Arabs?
I noticed that after the Vietnam war, Westerns all but disappeared from the screen.

Westerns tend to go in and out of fashion.

A big problem with 'Older Westerns', especially the big films from the 1950's & 1960's, is that they show Indians (Native American Indians) in a bad light and have the 'heroic white Cowboys' defeating these evil savages. Totally missing the point that the Indians were having their country stolen out from under them.

Modern westerns (I'm thinking of Deadwood, Young Guns, Tombstone, Wyatt Earp) tnd to focus upon the law vrs outlaws and are in affect cops & robbers.

Sorry but a western is simply that, light entertainment.
