Yes cleaning your old coins will hurt their value. Sixty or Seventy years ago cleaning a coin was okay but today's collector market devalues a coin that has been cleaned. There are ways to improve the look of a coin but it should be left to someone who has the experience to do it correctly so that there is no damage to the coin.

Do not use anything on them. Cleaning coins can damage them more than they are. When you say pretty old, are we talking ancient coins? If not, leave them alone. There are ways of cleaning ancient coins, but no need to list them if the coins are just old. Cleaning coins is actually an art and only the pros can get away with it. Real valuable coins can be what is called "conserved", that is professional cleaned.

Cleaning a coin may substantially reduce it's value. But it depends on the type of coin and the cleaning method. And, of course, the willingness of dealers or collectors to buy such coins.
At any rate, it's best left to professionals.

In many cases, yes, it will hurt their value. Best to check with a local coin shop. They have small protective cases that you can put them in to keep the condition from getting any worse.
