My friend is happy one minute and then sad and angry the next and you can never tell when this will change. Is he depressed?

I think if it's truly from literally "one minute to the next", then a physical exam is in order, and any doctor worth his degree is going to recommend a referral for an evaluation. I agree with the others in this chain, that it sounds like it could be a bipolar disorder, but I've also heard of other imbalances caused by even a little thing like food allergies. This person needs to see someone immediately; this behavior sounds too unpredictable and irrational as it stands, and could lead to dangerous, risky behavior left untreated. I would call this behavior to the attention of my friend, AND, because I care, I wouldn't stop there. Start with a person in authority you AND your friend trust. Don't allow anyone or anything to stop you. Don't give up trying.

Yes. Such drastic mood swings are often a sign of severe depression, called bipolar disorder.

he could have a very severe case of bipolar disorder, in which a person may fluctuate between near giddiness to rage in a matter of minutes in bad cases

no its worse its called being bi-poloar
they have out of wack mood swings and are super hyper and then super tired all at once
its very complicated tell him to ask his doctor and his doc can perscirbe him medication

Quite honestly, I believe that it is Bipolar Disorder. I know all about that believe me.
