You need comfortable shoes. If you don't have shoes that are specifically designed for salsa/ballroom, wear a pair of old dress shoes. It is best if they have leather sole and meduim heel. Flats are OK too. Also, shoes with open backs will be falling off every time you take a step back, so that won't work. Don't wear snickers or tennis shoes - the soles of snickers are designed for maxumim traction, they will stick to the flor and you won't be able to turn and spin easily.

As for clothes - wear something comfortable and somewhat dressy. A nice stretchy top and a skirt or a pair of pants wll be fine. Skirt needs to be wide enough for you to take any size of step confortably.

salsa is a social dance. just feel comfortable will do... unless u are going for a performance, for normal practices just wear something that allows u to stretch all ways....

footwear is impt. no slippers. no footwear without backstrap coz they will slap ur feet. best is wear the traditional ballroom and latin footwear, those with leather base. nid heels will be nice. and if u have none, the last choice would be sneakers and track shoes. they are meant to resist friction and salsa needs lotsa turns, and precision. i doubt i can do it with those shoes. so dun think a beginner can do that. if u dun have wad i had mentioned, just go with a pair of socks. that should be fine.

I frequent a salsa bar, and most of the women there who dance normally wear single coloured dresses. Some wear black, other wear red. Quite a few wear brighter colours. I guess it reflects the upbeatness of the music.

Also, I think that flat shoes would be best. You don't want to be falling over!

How about something that will make her feel comfortable. Some of the movements in salsa are fast and you cannot be constricted.
