Yes. Take it out and try again. You'll get the hang of it soon. They shouldn't hurt at all. In fact you'll have to remind yourself you are using them. Even long time users can have this problem, in a hurry, not paying attention, need to leave now, etc. all of these can cause you to insert it wrong.
I started my daughter's out on OB's they seemed to do just fine with them and loved to hide one in there socks lol

You're not getting in past the muscle. It takes some getting used to but take some deep breaths and relax so the muscle will let go a bit. Once it's past the muscle you will forget you're using one. Also be sure and aim it toward your lower back so it's not going in at an angle. Sometimes the OB (no applicator) ones are easier and sometimes the plastic applicators are easier. Just buy the smallest package you can and try different ones.

Try using a smaller tampon. Also, make sure you have it in far enough. They hurt me in exactly the same way until I figured out where exactly they're supposed to be, and now I can jump around and I don't feel a thing. Trial and error, you'll get it right eventually.
Also, try using one with a plastic applicator...the smoothness makes it easier to get it in further.

thtat's exactaly why I dont use them.. I wish I could be like all the other girls and jus tdeal with it.. how are they so comftrable with them? I dont get it... I swear I don't know how tho help you but I have the same problem so I odnt use them... so you aren't the only one if you go back to the pads... I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with being celabate... maybe if I get married someday it might be easier to try to use them...

you need to push them in a bit further,
and put some vaseline on it when you first start using them so they slip in easier and that should make it more comfy
