How can I become more detail orientated? I have a bad habit of starting something and leaving it halfway. I jump from one thing to the next.

I have had this problem all my life and I've had to work at it really hard, especially since I am a teacher. For me, the problem was many-fold. First of all, I finally found out at 30 (in univ.) that I had ADHD which really put my early school years in perspective. Second,I found coping mechanisms on how to stay focused on one task at a time (if u google ADHD you will find some outstanding techniques that will work for you even if you don't have ADD/ADHD). Third, I had to come to terms with the fact that I function better as a 'whole picture' person rather than worry about the details. Fourth, when details become absolutely crucial to task completion, I write them out on a separate sheet of paper and then I incorporate them into the whole picture task. Fifth, if that doesn't work too well, I break the task down into manageable chunks and work on one chunk at a time. I've also learned to 'reward' myself to stay on task and finally, if nothing works, then I forgive myself and start again. Good Luck, and don't beat yourself to death over this, just continue to work on it.

I wouldn't call this a lack of detail orientation, but rather a lack of project completion, follow through, and/or focus.

I, too, like to jump from project to project; however, simply learn when doing the "jumping" try to jump BACK to incomplete projects from time to time.

Life is too short focus on any one thing for an extended period and productivity is overrated.

Good luck....
