There are too many greats to narrow it down to one, although, the first name that popped into my head when I read the question was Luther Vandross. His voice was smooth and he had an amazing amount of voice control. You couldn't help but be soothed by his singing.

Ella Fitzgerald and Elvis Presley
Ella`s vocal range was amazing and Elvis could sing any song from pop rock to gospel. The exact opposites in style, yet both great.
