Putin , I I think, is what is called "a strongman."There are some others ,prime ministers who are strongmen, such as Hun Sen in Cambodia.
That is he wants to be democratically elected, wanted by his people, but he wants things his way and has created the infrastructure to support that desire.
Putin liked the old Soviet Union,he is a product of it and did well in it.
He admires the achievements of the USSR and wants Russia to attain heights equal or surpassing it.
He wants the Russians to enter the E.U. one day.He has worked steadily at this goal his entire career.
The only threat to his dream, is the American Empire.Which he has publicly stated his opinion on just recently.
He wants to ensure that his philosophy is kept going, and to do this he has to install a successor who is part of his camp.
He will make any governmental changes necessary to achieve this.
So what you will have is not Russia going back the USSR.But continuing to be Valerie Putinland for the next two decades.
