A man born in the eighteenth century was x years old in the year x2. How old was he in 1776?

You are looking for a four digit number 17xx, which is a whole square.Quite obviously ,the age must be 40 plus. Let us say , 40+y. Then (40+y)^2<1776 .Or y^2+80y must be less than 176.y can only be 2. So the age must be 42 , and the year 42x42=1764. 12 years later , in 1776 , he would be 54 years old
