Using the following definition:

Values Education is the process of providing opportunities for the continuous development in all students of the knowledge, skills and attitudes related to certain values which lead to behavior exhibiting those values.

First, I think of my Basic Military Training School and the "fun" we had learning--albeit indirectly--about the America way of life in the all too real world.

As a child, I remember character education as a time in the school day to goof off, debate subjective-type scenarios with by peers and teachers, and a complete waste of time.

As a teacher, I think of character education as another "new initiative" dictated by the school district offices, an unstructured part of the day, a time for students to goof off, debate with other students and me, and a complete waste of time.

Sorry for the less than popular answer, but sometimes the truth hurts.

Good Luck....

The answers to your question may vary a lot according to teachers, learners, place and time. Values are proportional, however education objectives are not only to teach the values of the past but to help our students to create their own values for the future. However, my personal experience with education, whether as a student or teacher, makes the world as a comedy to me simply because education is a process of reciprocity where you are really willing to give in the same way you are willing to take. This is the process of opening minds. It may be very hard; yet very interesting.

What I can tell you about the value of education is that I could not have made it as successfully in life as I have. I meet and have met important people at my job, and I think that is fun. I have been able to go to two space shuttle launches because of my boss with an all expense paid trip to see the most wonderous thing that most people do not get to see. I have traveled and enjoyed places that I would not have been able to go. I am a valued and very trusted employee and have been in security in this job and others. I continue to take classes when I can as the world is forever changing around us.

I think iy's very important to have values and know what you value and why. As a teacher I teach specific lessons designed to encourage the development of self-knowledge, respect, responsibility and rights in my students. This allows me to think about my own values.
