Basically the difference is in distance and luminosity on hi beam and the area is reduced on low beam. simply put the high beam allows you to see further in front of your car and low beam is less distance and generally used in traffic and in city driving. It is also part of the drivers license test about when to lower (dim) your brights.

Low beam headlights is what you use in normal driving conditions. There is a switch in your vehicle that changes your lights from low to high.In the High position. The lights get brighter and places the beam at further distance in front of you so that you can see things at night much farther in front of you. Some vehicles have headlamp systems that have either two different sealed beams, found in older vehicles,or separate Halogen Bulbs for High and Low Beam.At night, try making the difference by using the High and low beam switch. You will notice a small 'Blue' light come on when the Headlamps are in the High Beam position. It is unlawful to ride with your high beams on all the time. They are there for when you need to see much further in front of you at night.

High beams throw the light out a further distance and wider angel (you will have 4 lights on with hi-beams) - Low beams just illuminated hw\\what is right in front of you.

Low beam is usually a little less bright. It also aims the light a little lower and to the right, so that you can see the curb more easily, while also keeping your lights out of the eyes of oncoming motorists.

High beam is usually a little brighter. They should aim straight ahead, barely skimming the surface of the road. This gives better light in the distance, but will blind oncoming traffic.

The high beams on your headlights are used for better visibility at night by raising the focus of the light bean higher thus further down the road, The good part is that you can see further. The bad part is that it is glaring to oncoming traffic, so you also have low beams on your headlights which focus the beam lower and closer to the front of the car. No glare to oncoming traffic and everyone is happy.

Low beam is for normal night driving when no traffic is approaching you from ahead.
High beam is much brighter, and can blind oncoming traffic, therefore you need to "dimm" your lights to low beam.
