a type of male faerie said to inhabit the island of Ireland.
They are a class of "faerie folk" associated in Irish mythology and folklore, as with all faeries, with the Tuatha Dé Danann and other quasi-historical peoples said to have inhabited Ireland before the arrival of the Celts.
They usually take the form of old men who enjoy partaking in mischief. Their trade is that of a cobbler or shoemaker. They are said to be very rich, having many treasure crocks buried during war-time.According to legend, if anyone keeps an eye fixed upon one, he cannot escape, but the moment the eye is withdrawn he vanishes. The leprechaun originally had a different appearance depending on where in Ireland he was found.
Prior to the 20th century, it was generally agreed that the leprechaun wore red and not green

cording to legend, the leprechauns are fallen angels who hid under teh stair of heaven when satan rose agianst the powers of God. They were deemed not worthy of hell, but not fit for heaven, and were cast down. They fell for two years before they reached the earth, and then they spiraled around in the sky till they found Ireland. They fell in love with it, and have been there ever since. About 20 years ago, Walt Dizney put out a movie called 'I captured the king of the leprechauns' It is about 30 minutes total and has the legend in it. If you get the DVD of 'Darby o'gill and the little people', you can watch the short film in the extras section.
also if your a fan of sean connery you'll want to watch it, because its one of his early fils predating even his career as james bond.
another note, in dublin ireland, there is a library dedicated to myths and stories....if your in teh neighborhood, they have many books on leprechauns.

LUCK OF THE IRISH
A dragonfly with sticky wings,
Confined inside a garbage can,
Decided maggots weren't for him
And ate, instead, a box of bran.
With belly swollen full of gas,
He blew hot air and hit the lid.
Alas, there's no escape this day;
Into a moldy peach, he slid.
An Irish man with trash to dump
Had dropped the lid and yelled, 'P U!'
When suddenly daylight appeared,
The dragonfly knew what to do.
In moldy coat and maggot shoes,
Poor dragonfly could not soar far.
He plopped upon the old man's foot,
Still looking very much bizarre.
Near-sighted and quite slow to move,
This poor old man had had enough.
He saw a leprechaun jump out
And knew that he should call the bluff.
'March seventeenth has come at last
And, with it, luck must shine on me.
Just show me where you keep your gold
And I'll be glad to set you free!'
At that, the dragonfly just laughed
And flapped his wings to free the mold.
He flew up on the old man’s nose
And dropped his load of bran-filled gold.

They have been around since the beginning of time. 'Leprehaunn' or Leith Brogan, means the Artisan of the Brogae. (master shoemaker!) According to Lady Wilde in her book, Ancient Legends of Ireland,:
'The Leprehauns are merry, industrious, tricksy little sprites who do all the shoemaker's work...they know all the secrets of hidden treasure, and if they take a fancy to a person will guide him to the spot in the Fairy Rath where the pot of gold lies buried...the Leprehauns can be bitterly malicious if they are offended and one should be very cautious in dealing with them...'
They really don't like much interaction with humans because of the damage we are all doing to the environment. Master shoe-maker, fond of their money, and love to party and have a good time.

The belief in small beings who play pranks is widespread throughout Europe. The genesis of the legend is not easily traced.
