This has happened to me three times. I feel fine when all of the sudden (after some movement involving my knee) my knee "locks up." It feels like there is something in/around my knee that is about to literally snap if I try to move my knee. I can't bring myself to move it at all because of this. It goes away after awhile (range of 10 mins to 1 hour) and I feel perfectly fine. What is this?

It could be plenty of things, have you previously injured your knee? It could be a cruciate ligament inside your knee or meniscal problem, there are bursa as well that can burst and cause bursitis. Knee's are complicated and in order to truly find the problem you need to tell your doctor and request an MRI to get to the root of the problem. If it's happening recently defeniatly get it looked at before it gets worse and ruins your knee. Something isn't right inside it and you need to find out what it is.

Have you ever fallen/otherwise injured the knee? Could be a floating bone spur or something similar. Or a serious muscle spasm.

Get it checked out.

Sounds like a tear in your meniscus. I would get it checked.
