STOP copying and pasting things from wiki! any one can do that!!! the cold war started after ww2 and ended officially in 1991 but nether Russia nor USA have deactivated their nukes (ones still in service) and they are still pointed at Russian cities and can be launched within min (yes sad....) anyway after ww2 the Germans were defeated and the only two superpowers left were the USA and the USSR... they started an arms race, to see who can build the biggest and most bad *** nukes (Russians had more nukes and more powerful but the USA had better quality nukes) they blew them up to show off and then there was the space race... the USSR was ahead until around the mid 60s then the USA achieved a landing on the moon (or so they say...) then the US and USSR realized they can destroy the world in 1 h so they disbanded alot of nukes and then the USSR and its satellite states began do collapse dew to corruption and many many other factors...

Cold War - the struggle between the former Soviet Union (which wanted to spread communism & exert its influence on the world through it) & the Americans who wanted to prevent that while maintaining its role as a super power.
The cold war proper started after WW2 when Russia formed the Iron Curtain which covered Eastern Europe + Eastern germany - this was famously symbolised by the Berlin Wall.
Also, NATO was formed to counter the communist threat while USSR reacted by forming the Warsaw Pact.
Famous events during the Cold War -
U2 incident in the 1960s when an Amercian U2 reconnaisance aircraft was shot down in Soviet territory.
Vietnam War
Korean War
Bay of Pigs invasion
Cuban missile crisis
Middle East tensions - Arab-Israeli Wars
Operation Urgent Fury - invasion of Grenada to topple the communist regime

The Killing Joke by Alan Moore. Moore is a socialist, comic book genius who lives in London. It was written in 1989.
The Cold War may have ended in 1989 when Reagan had Gorbachev tear down The Berlin Wall - separating the East(Soviet Union) and the West(Europe and the United States).
It's the period after World War II, where the USA and Russia aimed to dominate the world with two very different types of societies. Marixism vs. Capitalism. God vs. Godlessness.

The cold war was a power struggle between the United States and Russia.
Both powers have the atomic bomb and both wanted to be number one in the world.
America a Democratic Republic and Russia a communistic
Country.
The phrase cold war was given to it because there was no actual fighting.

you know you would've been better off just asking direct questions and not mentioning the fact it was for an essay.
seriously you want some people to sit here and summarise 60 years of history, tensions, satellite wars and political power plays for your essay?!
Please just read some books.
Go to the library and look it up.......... this is Yahoo! Answers, not Yahoo! free essays

I think espionage is a pretty fascinating aspect of the Cold War. I recommend you go to Wikipedia and check-out the following spies: Kim Philby, Donald MacLean, Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt. These four formed the Cambridge Spy Ring. Philby was the ringleader and was the head of Britain's Soviet Counter-Intelligence; he is widely considered to be the greatest spy in history.
The Cambridge Spies were trusted to convey information from Churchill to Roosevelt and Truman. They gave every bit of information to Stalin first. At Yalta, Stalin knew every move the Western Powers wanted to make and was ready to counter them.
With the information leaked to the Soviets, it is hard to estimate how many hundreds, even thousands, of British and CIA spies and informants were killed at their orders. Most of their victims were partisans from Russia, Ukraine, Czechoslavakia, Hungary, Poland and other Soviet satellites.
When British and American agents were closing-in on MacLean and Burgess, they defected to the Soviet Union. Kim Philby did a brilliant job of disguising his own involvement and stayed at his post for years. Afterall, he was the head of the whole show and he had absolute power to cover his tracks.
Just in the nick of time, Philby escaped to the Soviet Union and was hailed a hero. I have been to Red Square many times and Philby is buried with State Honors behind Lenin's Tomb. Of Philby, British author John Le Carre said, "Philby has no home, no women, no faith. Behind the inbred upper-class arrogance, the taste for adventure, lies the self-hate of a vain misfit for whom nothing will ever be worthy of his loyalty. In the last instance, Philby is driven by the incurable drug of deceit itself."
Anthony Blunt thoroughly disguised himself and blended in with British Aristocracy. He was the Queen's personal Arts Consultant. Eventually in the 80's Blunt was outed by Margaret Thatcher.
Another great Cold War spy to look into is Rudolf Ivonovich Abel (a/k/a Emil R. Goldfus). The Gary Powers story is also fascinating, but I think the Cambridge Spies would make excellent essay material.

The Cold War was the opposite of a "hot" war (with fighting, weapons, and everything else). Basically it was a standoff, with each side (U.S. vs. Russia/USSR) threatening each other, spying on each other, building up weapons stockpiles, and so forth. They did everything but the fighting, hence it was a "cold" war.
