Trust me and my own experience: show your son movies in order so he will follow the story line. Begin with Star Wars 1, "The Phantom Menace", follow with "Attack of the Clones" and so on, and end up with Star Wars 6 "Return of the Jedi".
You might end up with a million of questions from your son if you will try to start with Star Wars 4.
And, by the way, most likely he will get questions like "what happen next?". I would recommend you to show him www.starwars.com/hyperspace This is a website for fans and has excellent database about characters, locations, species, and so on. Should you try to tell your son stories about what happen next, simply read him character's in "Database" Expanded Universe. There are tons of information about specific person, so you won't end up buying a book or two.
My husband and I went through this with our daughter and we save a lot of time by doing step by step as I just described.
I am sure your son will discover a whole new world for himself.
Enjoy and good luck!

Start with the prequeal. He just might not like the loss of the special effects 1/2 way through the series.

Start at episode 1, its too confusing for kids to watch out of order. My kid was 14 when she saw the original and didn't understand. But explain they were made out of order.

i think of you may do the pre-quels first considering the shown fact that leads you as much as the old celebrity Wars video clips. I have not have been given any clue why George Lucas had to action picture the final 0.5 of celebrity Wars before finally finding out to action picture the pre-quel video clips. It does not make experience to me to do it that way. Its very virtually like the Hannibal video clips. They have been filmed backwards too.

The originals. There is a reason they came out first.

Start with the original 1st. It was the best, anyway.

I'd show them in order. Start with the first prequel. That way, he'll be able to follow better. I don't know how old your son is, but if he's too young, it may be confusing to him out of order.
