It seems unlikely that any parent would deliberately set out to give their child a nasty or ugly name. Perhaps the name, Hymen, or Thorpe, has meaning for them that it doesn't for you. Jim Thorpe, for example, was highly respected. Naming a child for him would certainly be a positive thing. Or the name that you find objectionable might have special significance in the family.
Names that really set my teeth on edge are some of the 'cute' monikers that Hollywood celebs give their kids. I think the kleig lights have baked their brains. But then, what do I know? Those names may have cosmic significance for them.....

Hymen? ROFLMAO!!
I read once about twins named O'rangejello and L'emonjello.
I don't think people give out names *thinking* they are nasty or ugly.
That's just a matter of perspective. Even if 95% of the people who hear a name think it's ridiculous...that's still opinion.

Did you think that perhaps they were naming their child after a rather wealthy relative, or honoring someone loved?

They are trying to be unique and therefore curse their child with a stupid name for the rest of their lives.

Because
a) They think it is a beautiful name
or
b) because they don't know any better
or
c) - because they are looking for something unique and don't think beyond that.

They're either sadistic or just plain ignorant.
