I got r² + 5 is that right?

Heres your solution:
(r-5)(r+1)
= (rxr) + (r x1) + (-5xr) + (-5 x 1)
= r^2 + r - 5r - 5
= r^2 -4r -5

there ya go!

The answer above is correct.
first you multiply the r in (r-5) by r and by +1, leaving you with r^2 + 1r.
The you would multiply the -5 by r and by +1, leaving you with -5r -5.
So in total you have r^2+1r-5r-5.

When you combine the like terms (+1r-5r) you end up with:
r^2-4r-5

Use the FOIL technique. (First, Outside, Inside, Last) to solve this problem.

First: r * r = r^2
Outside: r * 1 = r
Inside: -5 * r = -5r
Last: -5 * 1 = -5
