I got 7a^4 - 2ab² - 2^4 -8ab - 2a^4 is that right?

It would be 6a^2+2ab-5b^2

I think you are making this harder than it really is. The plus sign (+) between the parentheses puts the whole equation on one level. If you just remove the parentheses and do the adding and subtracting of like variables it should all fall into place. The only way I can see you getting a^4 is by multiplying. If you have copied the equation correctly there is no multiplication indicated aside from those between the plus and minus signs.

6a^2 + 2ab - 5b^2 you don't add the powers, just the coefficients of same variable/power

simply you have to sum the same cofficentd together
a^2 with each other
ab with each other
b^2 with each othe
