not sure but my guess would be because cold air drops and warm air rises they put it on top to help cool the fridge a tiny bit to save some electricity

Actually there are not always on the top. Some models offer the freezer on the bottom while still others offer it on the side. If you think about it, having the freezer on the top is not really a good place unless you are a very short person or enjoy bending over often. Freezer on the bottom is better because when you open the refrigerator everything is at a convenient level.

That is not always true....I have a side by side refrigerator/freezer. As for the old style, what do you use the most, the refrigerator, or the freezer? I would suspect you use the refrigerator more often, therefore, it is at your level, especially for shorter people. You would not want to have to stoop down or even get on your knees to pull something out of the smaller freezer section if it were on the bottom.

Cold air sinks. Putting freezer compartments on top helps reduce the work the refrigerator does overall. I have seen some units that have the freezer on the bottom, but that's stupid.

You can get them with the freezer on the bottom. Reason? How often fo you get something out of the freezer, once a day?
If they're in the bottm, it is easier on the back.
I asked an appliance dealer why most are up top. His reply, damned if I know?
And this is a dealer that's been in business 50 years.,

Hot air rises, cold air falls to the bottom, by having the unit on the top, it is easier to transfer the cold to the refrigerator.

Because someone in refrigerator design thought we would like it that way. Is I'm sure you are aware you can get it on the side or the bottom as well, but come to think of it Ive never seen one on the right side...
