The Australians considered that the had sentimental links to England until 1943, when Churchill betrayed their trust.

The Japanese were about to invade, and the British said - Just let them come in and all us when they reach Brisbane. The Australian prime minister John Curtin said the hell with that, and called Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Within hours, Roosevelt ordered Admiral Chester Nimitz to defend Australia. From that day on, the Australians have known that their friends that they can count on are the Americans, not the English.

So they fly the Stars and Stripes in front of their national Parliament building in Canberra.

The Australian admiration for America gets a bit irrational at times, such as their blind support for the US attempt to prevent Vietnam's independence, and now the invasion of Iraq.
