Apparently one can graduate with sum *** laude, or magna *** laude honors, but what are the benefits to doing so? What is the incentive behind it? How does a graduate with these honors differ from the average joe smoe?

Well, graduating with honors certainly helps with graduate school admissions.

Many students work hard for such honors for precisely that reason. Fellowships and assistantships are awarded only to top students.

However, I am sure other students simply work hard to excel in each class they take because they value achievement for their own personal reasons.

Some even earn honors because they actually are really in love with learning, and really enjoy engaging deeply with the material they're studying. I've been fortunate to have had a few students like this in my classes over the years. If it weren't for students like this, I'd have a great deal less fulfillment in my work, that's for sure.
