a geode

Probably it is amethyst. However, it could be fluorite, which is calcium fluoride (CaF2). To check that possibility use an ultraviolet light on the purple mineral inside. If it fluoresces it is fluorite. If it does not fluoresce it is probably amethyst. There will be no doubt if the mineral fluoresces, it will be much brighter than only a reflection.

Alternatively, if you don't have an ultraviolet light, and if the crystals are free inside the rock (like a geode) look at their symmetry. Amethyst (which is the mineral quartz) has six-sided (sometimes three, depending on the physical and chemical environment when it was deposited) sided crystals, which meet at angles other than 90 degrees, whereas fluorite has sides that meet at 90 degrees, and the common crystal form is a cube. Basically if it doesn't look like some form of a cube, the crystals are probably amethyst.
