There several reasons. First off, a lot of coaches have the philosophy that a player should be "playing for the name on the front of the jersey instead of the back" (in other words playing for his/her team and not his/her self). So they won't put the names on the back of the jerseys.

Some schools also uphold the tradition of not putting names on the back of the jerseys. For example, Indiana University doesn't put the names on the back of the jerseys. And matter of fact the uniforms haven't changed much (except the length of the shorts) in the decades they've had the uniform style. You just have to see the red and white striped warmup pants to know it's gotta be a tradition thing.

Also, depending on the size of the school and their budget they may not be able to afford new uniforms every year. So this could be a deciding factor, especially for small mid-major schools, to not have the names on the back of the jerseys.

It's definitely not unusual to see it if that's what you're wondering.

Some schools try to emphasize the team, instead of individuals.
