ill tell you what it is. it is the Most VALUABLE Player. not the best player in the nba award, not the best player on the best team award. not the highest paid award. not the most flashiest player award. it goes to the player who is most valuable to his team meaning that a good team is sh!t without him. it means that the team cant win without him. nash is certainly a candidate, dirk is a candidate, and kobe is a candidate. paul pierce, joe johnson, ray allen etc... wont be considered for this award because their teams aren't good.
without nash, phx is very very average. proof? when nash sat out for 4 games, they went 1-3, losing 3 in a row to teams like atlanta and seattle.
without dirk, dallas is average too. when dirk doesnt do well, dallas usually doesnt do well either. they lost to golden state and a big part of that is because dirk was having a poor game and was frustrated the whole night.
and without kobe, the lakers are very average too.

Great question. When people disagree about who should win the MVP title, this is the reason--it's because people have different interpretations of what the "MVP" of a team should be.

I say that the MVP is the player who is an indispensable part of a WINNING team. It is the player who, if taken away, will have his team fall apart. So yes...I agree with What?'s list: Nash, Dirk, and Kobe. I would even throw in Tim Duncan to that list.

But I think that the NBA had it right the last two years, and will get it right again when they vote for Steve Nash. The thing that separates Nash from the rest of the list is the fact that he runs the whole show. If you watch a Suns game closely, you see how pretty much EVERY play is run through Nash. People love to talk about Marion or Amare, but don't realize that they have an open shot or open lane to the basket because the defenders are having to double Steve Nash coming off of all of those pick and rolls. The NBA is full of players who can score, but there's not a lot of players who can replace 11 assists a game. That's what an MVP is.

The player that opponents fear the most because no matter what you do you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him. Most of the time they tend to play on a really good teams and that's why a lot of people assume that MVPs should only come from winning teams, but that's not always the case. Alex Rodriguez played on a losing team when he won the MVP in 2003, but he was the most feared that year. Kobe Bryant last year was just unstoppable and I think he should have won MVP, but since a lot of people want a guy on a winning team to win MVP they chose Steve Nash. He's great too and almost no one can defend him, but he was on a winning team.

It means the best player of the game. The game of basketball is a team sport. NO I IN TEAM, and no championship for Kobe. Mavs are the best team, but with Dirk they would still be great. The cavs with lebron, are still good, but with lebron they tend to let him do it too much, the cavs motion needs lots of passing to work, which what they are doing now, before james would get the ball the others would watch. NASH is the best at the moment, he turns good players into great players, it was nash not dirk who carried the mavs, now he is doing it again with the suns. I think its the best player of the game of basketball. Kobe is the best player but can't do it alone, mavs without dirk are still good, the suns without nash are nothing, MVP steve nash.

MVP to me means more than just a players value to the team. It also should mean to the league, the community, their example for the youth, their team, and whether or not the team or league would have had a less of a year if they had not played. Winning percentage figures into the awards when a player has stats that proves the team wins more when he is in the lineup than when he is out.

great question

MVP goes to the player that is talked about. the player who is always in the media. a player who is leading his team to the top of the table. a player who is leading the L by example. the player who every team scouts and concentrates on when theyre up against them

in saying so i believe its dirk or nash.

dirk is showing maturity, hes leading the best team to the best record int he L. Nash is again showing that u dont have to be selfish to win games. averaging near 20 and 10 is fantastic, especially when the 10 is assists.

Most Valuable Player. It's the player who's the most important for his team in one of the best team. I'd pick Nash or Nowitzki this year.

MVP stands for Most Valuable Player. To be it really doesn't mean that much becos I do not have the chance to vote for who the player is, it is all up to the sport critics to choose whoever they think is good. But if I have a say, I want the MVP to be the most important player to a team.

MVP is the player that steps up brings the team high hopes when in a tight game. Or a player that brings the crowd to its feet after losing a few games and giving the crowd hope about their team.

MVP means a player without on his team the team couldn't win that's how "VALUABLE" the player is. The MVP is like the heart and soul of the team without him the body won't even function
