A better query is; how does anyone determine if any company is legit?
Check with various blog sites,
check with your local chamber of commerce, maybe the BBB, etc.

if your method of paying for the service is not insured, do not buy the service. [my credit card company insures me after $50]

One way to quickly check is to do a domain search "whois" at internic.net.

You can find out to whom the domain is registered, and if the information is accurate - that is, they provide street address and phone number that exist - you'd be surprised how many do not. You can also check the ip address of the website to find out which country is hosting the site - it's easier to get satisfaction from a site hosted in your own country than china or korea, say (although that's not a guarantee at all). If the domain information is inaccurate, you can write the company off immediately - why would they lie about something like that if they are legit? If that checks out, you can try to search the registration of corporations in the state they are registered in, and do the routine checks - better business bureau, google the name for complaints, etc.

Look at the company record. How long have they been in business?
Also see if they are a member of the BBB.

check with the better business bureau. Do not go to ripoff.com, those are just average people who failed at their business, gave up, and needed a place to complain.
