I'm a ringer for a church softball team, and it occurred to me the other night that this might defeat the whole purpose of church softball. is it cheating? I don't belong to this church or even to protestantism, but they needed a clean-up batter and I had no other plans. It's beginning to appear to me that all these other churches recruit other such players anyway, so if it is cheating then why is every team in the church league doing it?

yea. thinking it over, I really don't give a damn. I'm a ringer and I'm proud of it. All I want to do is sock some dingers and make those other church teams pray that the beating they are getting by the hands of a Catholic will soon end. Justify myself? I'm not justifying anything. I merely asked a question and you flip out on ethics (it was a trick question! nobody who plays on those teams is moral)!

Here's to summer ball.

I played a couple of years of church softball myself because a friend of mine asked me too even though I didn't belong to his church. To my surprise I was not the only one, in fact it seemed like at least a third of the players were hired guns. I got a chuckle out of it to say the least. Here I thought I was going to play in some layed back games and alot of these guys took it so seriously I had to laugh at times. There were even a couple of the local highschool players there that I recognized, and if their coach had known he would have probably killed them. I remember hitting a homerun off of this guy once and trying have some fun I jokingly flipped my bat and this guy starts staring me down like he was Roger Clemens or something as I was going down the baseline. Sure enough next time I get up to the plate, do I get a nice slow pitch? Heck no, guy winds up and gives me chin music and I had to bail while I am thinking WTF have I gotten myself into?

Morality is not about doing what everyone else is doing it is about doing what you know is right in spite of what everyone else is doing. There are 9 other people on the team who also know that you don't attend their church. Are they OK with the arrangement? They probably are, so are the other teams and you may be missing the whole point of the league. You are not only being recruited to hit for the team but to hit for God. You are a member of their church now and in this way they are spreading the word to you. The purpose of church based leagues is to spread the word and if you exclude people from the word of God you go against your religion. So they have the opportunity one night a week on a softball field to do that through you. I'm surprised that there are only one of you on the team, they usually invite 2 or 3 to join. So enjoy your recruitment and join them in church for one Sunday to relieve the burden of your guilt.

Yes it is cheating, that is what a RINGER is. You ask if it is cheating yet admit that you are by using that name. On top of that if you have any religion being a ringer for a Church of another religious view is really wrong in my opinion. Dude stop trying to justify what you know and feel is wrong. If it wasn't wrong you wouldn't try to justify it. As to everyone else doing it, that still doesn't make it right. Just about everyone speeds, should we do away with speed limits then?

must be a really good prize...

or maybe it's just pride...

but then again...pride is a sin...lol

i don't know what to tell you. do what you think you should do.

when you get older and tell this part of your life to your friends (or even kids), think about how you'll feel then.

so to answer your question: why is every team in the church league doing it? because, they're all cheaters. that's pretty much it.......it's church, what's there to gain from winning? respect? until next year? get out of church card? lol

good luck to you.

Competion is Competion. Are they trying to get you to go to their church and to save you of your sinning ways? If so then maybe that is the motive.
